I posted a list of gay friendly shows earlier. I can’t stress enough how important it is that TV is paving the way for acceptance of the gay community. Not only does this give scared, confused closeted teens hope and someone to identify with, but it brings a positive view of homosexuality into people’s homes.
While film is hesitant to embrace gay characters, TV has had a strong presence in people’s lives thanks to the internet, the recession, and the increasing price of movie tickets.
(Yes, I know, an old cover, but important still).
I’ve seen some people re-blogging this, mad at the fact that these stereotypical gay characters -“who were made just for their sexuality”- are the face of gay teens. Unfortunately, they’re somewhat ignorant of the fact that the actor on the right originally auditioned for another character. The creators of Glee then made this character inspired by him.
Also, I’ve made a list of some 70 shows that have main gay characters (such as Pretty Little Liars, Torchwood, and True Blood, which smashes stereotypes) and featured gay characters. So, before you jump to conclusions of what the media has done, please take a moment to look at that list.
